All RSU 21 5th graders will attend Julia Robinson Math Festival at University of New England with help from Mathematical Sciences Research Institute professionals.  The festival is a non-competitive event featuring math challenges and puzzles that require creativity and persistence to solve.  5th grade teachers, math teachers from MSK and KHS and KHS student mentors will participate as well.

Program: Destination Imagination

Group of MLD students placed 2nd in states competition for Destination Imagination and needed funding help to get to Global Finals in Knoxville, TN.  Destination Imagination is an enrichment program where students work together as a team using creativity and ingenuity to problem solve.  Destination Imagination creates challenges to connect with national education learning standards.   The group also had team members from Korea, adding global awareness and communication to their experience.  The parents/students raised much of their own expenses for the trip.

Twelve Reading Comprehension CDs for grades K – 6 are purchased to encourage use of Smartboards, which are new to the school.  Mildred L. Day teachers researched  the software and will pilot its use; if successful the program could then be introduced to other RSU#21 schools.

Mobile carts outfitted with supplies allow students to cook in their classrooms.  Students grow produce in school gardens and can enjoy healthy foods while learning math, reading, geography and life skills.  This program aligns with district wellness initiatives.

The EFKA supported this program last year for K – 1 classes. In this second phase, the program is expanded to include second grade teachers, RTI tutors, Title 1 and special education staff. As part of this project, a Handwriting Without Tears representative would come to our district to present to our teaching staff (approx. 96) about the HWT program and how they could best implement their strategies into the classroom to ensure successful handwriting instruction and remediation. The grant also requests to purchase classroom tools and materials for each teacher.
